Course Offerings

All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Language Arts courses offered during our summer session will focus on vocabulary, reading comprehension, comprehension literature, and comprehension information text.  These courses are designed to strengthen and improve essential skills while simultaneously exploring deeper learning opportunities.  


   

 

LA 6

Language Arts 6th Grade Intro

This course is available to incoming 6th graders who would benefit from a review of 5th-grade foundational skills and further instruction to prepare students for entering intermediate school. This course will include a survey of California State Standards including reading literature, reading informational text, writing, language development, speaking, and listening skills. Students will practice identifying the central idea and determine supporting details in both literature and informational text passages. Students will be exposed to identifying effective expression in a variety of formats including writing, speaking, and listening. This course will review using context clues in determining the meaning of unfamiliar words and introduce new vocabulary. An overall emphasis on grammar and the correct usage of language will help students prepare for 6th-grade language arts. This class is limited to incoming 6th graders only.

 

LA 7

Language Arts 7th Grade Intro

This course is designed for incoming 7th graders to strengthen foundational skills and increase content knowledge in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. This course will include a review of California State Standards including reading literature, reading informational text, writing, language development, speaking, and listening skills. Students will compare and contrast different excerpts from a variety of genres. Students will draw conclusions and make inferences based on the author’s purpose. The acquisition of content knowledge will be expressed through writing, class discussions, projects, and other formative methods of assessment. Students will practice listening skills as they engage in a range of collaborative discussions through synchronous distance learning. Students will be exposed to language conventions when writing, speaking and listening. This class is limited to incoming 7th graders only.

 

LA 8

Language Arts 8 Grade Intro

This course is constructed to provide incoming 8th graders increased practice in the CAASPP Performance Areas of listening, reading, research, and writing. Students will build on the foundational skills already developed through their first two years of intermediate school. This course will include a focus on the California State Standards that include reading literature, reading informational text, writing, language development, speaking, and listening skills. Students will analyze literature and informational text excerpts and cite several pieces of textual evidence to support the author’s point of view or purpose. Students will practice writing arguments to support their analysis with clarity and relevant textual evidence. An introduction to research will expose students to use evidence from multiple sources and writing explanatory texts with clear reasoning. Students will practice speaking and listening skills through synchronous collaborative learning discussions with diverse peers. This class is limited to incoming 8th graders only.
